Some of you may have discovered your love for Shawarma at an early age, while some of you may have never heard of it. It’s a popular middle-eastern wrap that has been around for aeons and has become a hit with many Indians.
What’s not to love? It’s a wrap generously stuffed with slow-cooked meat, fries, pickled vegetables and thoum or toum (garlic sauce). It’s popular both for its flavour and for its price, being on the cheaper side of fast food. Thus, it is often the date food of choice for young couples in love looking for pocket-friendly meals.
This Valentine’s Day, you may be opting to stay indoors for obvious reasons, however, why not reminisce on your early dates with your loved one or try something new and easy, by putting Shawarma on the menu. One of our chefs has concocted the easiest yet mouth-wateringly good recipe possible. It can be ready in mere minutes and will go down well as a delicious, thoughtful meal that may become a household favourite.
Before we delve into the recipe, let’s learn more about this amazing dish.
The Origins of Shawarma
Shawarma is an Arabic word that means “turning”, and refers to how the meat is cooked. Meat such as chicken, lamb, turkey etc. is marinated and slow-roasted on a vertical spit, with thin slices being shaved off in intervals to make the wraps. While this has become the popular name for this food, Shawarma first originated in Turkey in the 18th century.
In Turkey, it’s known as the döner kebab. Shawarma first spread from Turkey to Greece, where it became known as the gyro, then to the Middle East, where it was dubbed Shawarma. You can opt for the wrap where the meat, pickles fries and veggies are placed in pita bread and rolled. There is, however, another version known as the Shawarma Plate, where the bread, meat, pickles, fries and veggies are all served separately on a platter.
Whichever one you opt for, you can be sure that deliciousness will follow. Since Shawarma is such a majorly popular dish, we decided to make it easily accessible to everyone, every day! Thus, our ready-to-eat Shawarma Spread was born.
