The Origin of Kerala Fish Moilee
The dish’s origin dates back to a few centuries ago when the Portuguese colonised India. During that period, Kerala was one of the leading ports in the country. The Portuguese influence significantly impacted Indian trade, culture, and food. Thus, many vegetables and dishes like barbeque, Portuguese stew and vindaloo became part of Indian cuisine.
Kerala was a state where seafood and spices were abundant. The locals cooked authentic Kerala dishes for the Portuguese but could not handle the spicy dishes with equal expertise. That is when modifications came about to make the dish mild. So, instead of red chilli powder, coconut milk was added. The Portuguese enjoyed the dish and called it ‘Lady Molly.’ It was named after the woman who first created the item, and this is how this popular dish Fish Molee came about!
